08 October 2007 Drivers' brake awareness 'slippy'
Brake pad and disc maintenance is an area many drivers in the UK do not know much about, new statistics have shown. The Department for Transport (DfT) has found that 85 per cent of people on the road do not have any indication of how to keep the safety feature from failing.
With one in three accidents caused by insufficient brakes, motorists with a thin knowledge of them may find that their car insurance policies become compromised in the event of a collision.
Lee Noble of Safe-Brakes.co.uk commented that it is "amazing" that the area of expertise often goes ignored.
"We hear reports of vehicles rolling down a hill when the handbrake is put on and fails to operate ... it's quite common and a very dangerous problem that can be avoided by good brake maintenance," he said.
Meanwhile, figures from the DfT show that there were 3,150 road deaths in the UK in 2006.
