05 October 2007 Bedfordshire police in warning to motorists
People leaving expensive items on display in their vehicles should stop doing so if they wish to avoid being made a victim of crime, it has been claimed.According to Bedford Today, the area has seen a number of robberies, with everything from loose change to car stereos taken by opportunistic thieves.
Officers are combating the crime by taking down the details of those leaving things in view and then sending them a letter to remind them not to do it - something which may also see them save their car insurance policies.
"Over half the incidents of car crime are opportunistic. Vehicles with property on display are more likely to be broken into because thieves will risk setting off an alarm if there is an obvious pay-off," crime reduction officer Lara Curtayne said.
Those with a satellite navigation system may also find it is a good idea to remove the device before leaving the car.
Additionally, any suction marks left by its housing should be wiped away, so as not to give thieves any indication there is an expensive item inside.
