01 October 2007 Smokers targeted in new Highway Code

Smoking behind the wheel 'a bad idea' Motorists who smoke behind the wheel face penalties, according to the latest revision of the Highway Code.

The 2007 edition states that any behaviour that may be distracting - including listening to loud music or reading a map - should be avoided.

According to road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick, drivers are being told to keep alert if they wish to remain on the right side of the law.

Indeed, a motoring conviction can see people pay more when it comes to taking out a car insurance policy as they are viewed as more of a threat by cover companies.

The official said: "If you're lighting up with one hand and have a fag in the other hand then obviously you've not got any hands on the wheel."

First published in 1931, the Highway Code recently celebrated its 75th year as the handbook for drivers.
