28 September 2007 Highway Code revised to help new drivers

The Department for Transport (DfT) has revised the Highway Code to provide guidance to new drivers.

In a move which may be of interest to car insurance customers, the government has included a new Safety Code for Novice Drivers to offer practical advice on road safety.

Unveiling the revised rules, road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick described how the Highway Code is "for life", rather than just to help people pass their tests.

"It is a crucial tool for all road users - car drivers, motorcyclists, cyclists, horse riders and pedestrians alike - and applies to every stage of your life," he remarked.

However, while new drivers can experience a "risky time" behind the wheel for the first few months, the latest addition of the code provides advice and reminders of the rules they must comply with, he added.

Publishing the latest road casualty statistics recently, the DFT reported that in 2006 the most common factor contributing to accidents was drivers failing to look properly.
