27 September 2007 Poll points to problem with driver fatigue
New statistics have outlined the problem driver fatigue has posed for motorists in the UK.A whatcar.com poll show that 22 per cent of Britain's 28 million people on the road have fallen asleep at the wheel once, with a further 18 per cent doing it more.
In total, 11.2 million people in the UK have slept at the wheel, something which could compromise a number of car insurance policies.
Still, it may be encouraging to some to learn that 60 per cent of motorists have never dozed off behind the wheel.
This comes after the Associated Press reported that the Food & Drug Administration in the US linked the activity to drug and pill use.
What Car? has issued advice to those who struggle to stay awake.
This includes driving during normal waking hours and avoiding a big meal before a trip.
Similarly, a 20 to 30-minute nap can help recharge the batteries.
