25 September 2007 Road emissions reduction a target for transport minister

A government minister has stated that he would like to see the amount of daily carbon emissions cut down in the future.

Currently, 20 per cent comes from road transport, with transport official Jim Fitzpatrick calling its reduction "vital".

This comes as the government has announced a £20 million fund available for the development and production of environmentally-friendly vehicles.

Car insurance customers may be interested in becoming greener as some cover companies offer cheaper car insurance policies for the eco-conscious.

"This fund represents an excellent opportunity for UK expertise to help shape a low-carbon future for transport and I would urge companies to grasp it with both hands," said the minister.

At the Frankfurt International Motor Show earlier this month, Volkswagen displayed its Polo BlueMotion - a fuel-efficient vehicle range it said it would like to expand to seven cars by the end of 2008.
