25 September 2007 ABD criticises 'ageist government'
The Association of British Drivers (ABD) has branded the government's plans to introduce retesting for the over-70s as unfair.Instead, the body has suggested that officials look to punish and reassess motorists who have a proven bad performance record on the road.
Brian Gregory, chairman of the ABD, stated that the great majority of drivers taking out pensions were well-equipped to get behind the wheel.
Such a system may see older motorists forced to pay more for a car insurance policy, as cover companies could side with the government and assume a pensioner to be an automatic road risk.
But Mr Gregory added: "[Older drivers] should be encouraged to be aware of the dangers of failing faculties but should not be subject to blanket testing."
Earlier this year, the ABD criticised a decision to reduce the speed limit on the A52 in Lincolnshire.
According to the group, the move was "barking mad".
