24 September 2007 Motorists' lives 'risked by rogue repairmen'

Drivers should beware dodgy mechanics Mechanics failing to perform to a high standard when repairing tyres could be gambling with people's wellbeing, a regional news source has stated.

Trading Standards investigated garages in the south of England and found that 50 per cent of businesses do not leave wheels inflated to the correct level, the Harrow Times has reported.

According to director of the body Bill Bilon, this is an "unacceptable" trend that "rings alarm bells".

He said: "Consumers need to know that once they take a punctured tyre to a business to be repaired, it is to a standard where they can then drive on our roads in complete safety."

An insufficiently inflated tyre could result in motorists losing control of their vehicles and risking their car insurance policies.

Meanwhile, comparison site gocompare.com has warned drivers about the risk of 'fronting' - the act of insuring a car in a parent's name when it is their child who actually drives the vehicle.
