24 September 2007 Reading drivers cough up for council

Motorists fined for bus lane used. Motorists in one area of Berkshire have paid out more than expected in fines this year, a national news source has revealed.

The BBC has commented that Reading drivers breaking the law by illegally heading into bus lanes have paid £58,225 for every 30 days of the year - higher than the £10,000 per month estimated by officials.

In addition to the prices charged for car insurance and road tax, it may be that drivers cannot afford the extra amount.

Nigel Humphries, representative of the Association of British Drivers (ABD), stated that he was "astonished" by the totals.

But the expert pointed out that there are some instances in which motorists may need to make use of the bus lane.

Earlier in the year, the ABD criticised London mayor Ken Livingstone's announcement of a public consultation over the congestion charge.

The body claimed that the decision was "ignorance personified".
