21 September 2007 Phone rules called "unworkable" by road expert

Driving while chatting 'needs tighter regulation' Motorists should pick up a dangerous driving charge once they are caught using their mobile phone behind the wheel, according to a former road traffic official.

Ken McDonald, now director of public prosecutions, commented that he would like to see harsher regulations put in place in order to punish irresponsible drivers, the icBerkshire has reported.

The expert added that multi-tasking is not a skill suited to driving, the news source added.

"It's not about driving skills, you may be an excellent driver, it's about trying to do two things at once," he said.

"Something has to give and it's usually your driving skills."

Elsewhere in the county, rogue motorists caught out by officers are being offered to take the Call Divert workshop rather than pick up a fine or licence points - penalties that can affect a car insurance policy.
