21 September 2007 'Useless road signs' slammed by campaigners

Spoiling the scenic beauty? Most road signs are "cluttering" the UK countryside, a campaign group has stated.

The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) has condemned the placards, with planning campaigner Paul Miner adding that the highways are currently a "mess".

Rural areas would keep their beauty if the majority of notices and signs were removed, the group stated.

Similarly, the CPRE has indicated that it believes this could see drivers behave more responsibly on the road, resulting in fewer accidents and potentially cheaper car insurance policies for motorists.

"By getting rid of this clutter, local councils, highway engineers and communities can make our countryside a safer and more attractive place to be," remarked Mr Miner.

Meanwhile, official statistics from the government show that there were some 3,150 people killed on roads in the UK during 2006.

This is down from 2005, when there were 3,201 fatalities recorded.
