20 September 2007 Speed bumps 'drivers' number one irritation'

Speed bumps irritate most drivers. The biggest irritation for motorists while on the road is the low-lying speed bump, according to new research.

Most drivers (87 per cent) cited the safety precaution as an annoyance to them and told NewCarNet.co.uk that they would like to see them removed.

Company spokesperson Massimo Pini commented that the installation of the feature normally causes increased problems rather than improved safety.

In fact, research from Warranty Direct found that one in eight cars has suffered damage over the last ten years due to the road obstruction.

As a result, car insurance customers may find their policies compromised through no fault of their own.

"Discrepancies exist not only in the rules for constructing speed humps, but also councils' reasoning for installing them," Mr Pini said.

Research from Sainsbury's earlier this month found that motorists in the UK considered snacking at the wheel to be their worst driving habit.

The firm added that 41 per cent admitted to eating and drinking while travelling.
