19 September 2007 Continually monitor contents cover, says home insurance body
Homeowners have been urged to keep their contents cover up-to-date throughout the year by the body which represents the home insurance industry in the UK.Marriage and inheritance can see new items enter the home, so consumers should keep their provider informed of what they own of value, according to research from the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba).
Some 9,983 items were listed by Biba in 2005 as products which can be written into a policy, with companies factoring in the cost of replacing them as new rather than their actual value.
Technical services manager for the body Graeme Trudgill commented that people should not be deterred from keeping their cover provider in the know throughout the year.
"You must review [contents insurance] continually. Quite often, if it's gone up a couple of thousand pounds it won't really affect your premium anyway," said the expert.
