18 September 2007 Drink-driving clampdown sees thousands tested
Officials tested nearly 5,000 drivers in a campaign to catch out those motorists who take to the road while under the influence of alcohol. Some 218 of the 4,492 tested by South Yorkshire Police were found to be guilty of the crime, or failed to offer a sample or even take part in the scheme.
The ten motorists arrested as part of the clampdown represent a 17 per cent fall in the number of people facing a criminal conviction for committing the act.
And with government figures showing that an average of 3,000 people are killed or injured in related collisions each year, South Yorkshire Police Chief Constable Meredydd Hughes has commented that the force will not give up when it comes to cracking down on rogue motorists.
"We will continue to pursue drivers who put the lives of others at risk throughout the year," he said.
