18 September 2007 Arnie terminates young drivers on phone
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has brought in a new law meaning that young motorists under the age of 18 can no longer use a mobile phone while driving. The bill was passed on Thursday September 6th 2007 and prohibits the use of any electronic device behind the wheel if a person is under the limit.
Former actor Schwarzenegger commented that a number of drivers new to the roads can often cause more problems.
He said: "The simple fact is that teenage drivers are more easily distracted. They are young, inexperienced and have a slower reaction time."
In the UK, being caught while on the phone behind the wheel can result in a £60 fine and a three-point licence penalty.
Similarly, it can have a knock-on effect on car insurance - something which may already be a problem for new motorists as insurers view them as a greater risk.
