17 September 2007 Motorists 'say anything to escape jam'
People caught speeding by police will often say anything to get off the hook - even if it is nothing new or original. While some rogue motorists may be fast once they break the legal limit, they are not as quick at coming up with a suitable excuse for their actions, according to the Cambridge Evening News.
Being late for work and having to drive fast in order to get up a hill were among the most common reasons for risking lives, the news source added.
It may also be that the illegal act sees them compromise a car insurance policy and pay a larger premium next time they come to renew.
Police Community Support Officer Chris Blewett said that drivers look for "all manner of excuses" when caught in the act.
"The 30 mph zones are there for a reason and we'll be conducting more tests soon," he said.
Confused.com recently found one in four drivers had lied to their insurer when taking out a motor insurance policy.
