14 September 2007 Daily checks 'skipped by truck drivers'

Motorists should check their car before they drive. Assessing the vehicle before a journey is a necessity not being performed by a number of commercial truck drivers, it has been claimed.

Castrol research reported by Road Transport UK has found that 54 per cent have never performed the routine task of topping-up oil levels.

Of those who do, the motoring company has suggested that they normally get it wrong. This may affect a car, truck or van insurance policy should a driver become involved in an accident.

"Although many UK truck drivers are doing daily checks, as well as affecting the performance of their vehicles, using the wrong oil can damage the engine, or at worst, cause failure," said Castrol technical manager Brian Utton.

Furthermore, the firm found that half of respondents believed such maintenance was the responsibility of employers.

Meanwhile, the Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety has warned students to keep an eye on the condition of their cars as term begins.
