14 September 2007 Dozing off at wheel problem for 1 in 14

Drivers have been urged to stay awake. Over the course of 2006 one in every 14 motorists on the road fell asleep behind the wheel, according to new research.

Green Flag has stated that some 2.3 million admitted to dozing off while driving - something which could have a serious effect on safety for a number of people - Which? has reported.

This means that seven per cent of the driving population of the UK endangered lives by drifting into sleep on the road.

It may also be that motorists risk their car insurance no-claims bonus if they doze off and clip their vehicle.

Road safety charity Brake's Dianne Ferreira commented that the statistic was a worry and compared it to being inebriated while on the road.

She said: "Sleeping at the wheel is a huge problem. We could be dealing with something of drink-driving proportions."

Earlier this week, Brake advised that teaching young people road safety could be of benefit to them in later life.
