11 September 2007 'More women driving after drinking'

The number of women taking to the road while over the legal alcohol limit has gone up since the mid-90s, it has been revealed.

Research from the Liberal Democrats has found that females potentially risking their car insurance policies by breaking the law in this way increased by more than half (58 per cent) from 1995 to 2004.

According to the political group, the number of males committing the same crime has gone down over the period, meaning that anti-drink-driving schemes in the future may have to shift their priorities.

"Instead of focusing drink-driving campaigns only on men, women also need to be targeted," said Liberal Democrat transport spokesman Alistair Carmichael.

Meanwhile, figures from the Department for Transport show that there are 3,000 accidents resulting in death or serious injury each year involving drivers over the legal alcohol limit.
