10 September 2007 Staggered driving licence may be introduced

It may take young motorists over a year to pick up their driving licence if new proposals being discussed are introduced.

The BBC has reported that police and motoring chiefs have met in Perth, Scotland, in order to convene over young driver fatalities.

Similar rules that may also be passed include limiting the number of passengers inexperienced motorists may carry in addition to a night-time road curfew, it added.

Car insurance policies for young people may fall as a result, while Dianna Ferreira, spokeswomen for road charity Brake, has claimed that the move would be welcome.

She said: "We'd like to see the scheme in place and it has been proven to work. We are calling for this in Scotland."

Last month, research from Brake found that one fifth of motorists under 25 have driven while under the influence of alcohol.
