07 September 2007 Police to host road safety consultation in Scotland
Police in Scotland are to convene with motoring groups in an effort to reduce the mortality rate among young drivers, according to a national news source.Officials will get together in Perth to discuss the problem, with suggestions likely to include night-time curfews and passenger limits for inexperienced road users, the BBC has reported.
It may be that young people are viewed as a risk by car insurance companies, meaning that they receive higher policy quotes when they look for a deal.
Tayside Police Chief Constable John Vine commented that the decision to hold the meeting is a "vital" development.
"We need to get all the individuals and organisations involved in road safety around the table and reach some consensus on how we might address the young driver problem," the officer said.
This comes a week after Mr Vine warned motorists still using handheld phones in their cars that they have had long enough to adapt to new legislation against it.
