06 September 2007 FMD backlog will not see DfT cut working hours'

Van drivers and commercial hauliers across the UK will be expected to work their usual hours despite an increased load due to the summer's foot and mouth disease (FMD) crisis, it has been reported.

Road Transport UK has claimed that movement restrictions caused by last season's outbreak have created a large backlog for the rest of the year.

Despite the risks posed by driver fatigue - such as to a van insurance policy - the Department for Transport (DfT) has not yet offered to alleviate the work.

"We are keeping the situation under review and have asked the Scottish executive to demonstrate that there are serious risks to animal welfare to allow us to reassess the situation," a spokesperson for the official body remarked.

A foot and mouth outbreak was reported in the south of England earlier this year.

The disease is only contracted by human beings in extremely rare cases, but pigs and cattle are prone and it can be fatal.
