05 September 2007 Motorpoint: Raise driving age to 21
The largest car supermarket company in Britain has backed calls to raise the legal age at which a person can go on the road - but to 21, not 18.Politicians had stated that young people should not be able to receive a driving licence until they are 18.
However, a survey from Motorpoint shows that 66 per cent of people do not think that such a measure would be enough to curb the number of road traffic collisions involving 18 to 24-year-olds.
Some car insurance companies issue higher policies to young people claiming that in general they are often inexperienced and lack road sense, making them more of a threat to other drivers.
Managing director David Shelton stated that the responsibility of being on UK highways may be too much for some 17-year-olds, commenting also on the firm's own safety principles.
"As a supporter of RoadSafe, we have a responsibility as a retailer to inform them about the importance of safe driving," he said.
Last month, Brake found that one in five young drivers under 25 had been in control of a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.
