05 September 2007 Travel insurance 'may be forgotten in last-minute rush'

A last-minute deal on a dream trip abroad may see people frantically rushing around to get themselves ready to go, forgetting to take out travel insurance in the process, it has been claimed.

Some 8.8 million people will this year book a trip two weeks before leaving, with one in five subsequently letting cover slip their minds, according to research from Sainsbury's.

If the trend of booking a last-minute getaway continues, the three million people per year going away without protection could rise.

"This is great for holidaymakers, but without appropriate insurance in place a holiday can soon turn into a nightmare if disaster strikes," said Sainsbury's spokesperson Steve Johnson.

Meanwhile, research from the Association of British Travel Agents has found that people heading on holiday with caravans should check their car insurance policies before they leave to make sure all eventualities have been taken into account.
