04 September 2007 Drivers made aware via new signage system

Motorists travelling on the M25 will be made aware of the state of the motorway by a new electronic system to be installed on the road.

According to What Car?, the Highways Agency is to employ the technology along Europe's busiest highway in order to keep drivers up-to-date.

The system employs automatic number plate recognition hardware and will be rolled out by the organisation following successful trials in the West Midlands and south-west England.

As a result, it may be that this method of route planning sees motorists avoid becoming lost and possibly invalidating their car insurance policies.

"We are making the best use of technology to help drivers find out about traffic conditions on their route both before they leave and during their journey," said road minister Tom Harris.

Those who like to employ technology within their own vehicles may be interested in picking up a satellite navigation system.

Such technology plans a route by transmitting signals to and from space.
