04 September 2007 Organisation backs calls to increase legal driving age

The age at which it becomes legal to drive on the road should be increased, according to a transport organisation.

A report in the Visitor has claimed that the Road Safety Group is behind plans outlined by MPs to up the amount of training available to learners before they receive their licence.

The organisation pointed out that inexperienced motorists should always be taught in dual-control vehicles - where the instructor has his own pedals - and that they should train on the motorway.

Proposals for extra hazard perception teaching have also been made, as have calls for a thorough syllabus.

This comes as the Road Safety Group has released its Perfect Partner CD, in which students and their teachers are instructed on how best to conduct lessons - something which may have a positive effect on a car insurance policy.

However, road safety may not be quite that simple, as research from charity organisation Brake has stated that around half of all teenagers have been driven by a motorist over the legal alcohol or drug limit.
