03 September 2007 Young drivers risking lives by racing
Young motorists are risking the lives of other people as well as their own by racing through residential areas, it has been reported.According to the Lancashire Evening Telegraph, police have claimed that some drivers are hitting speeds in excess of 70 mph - a risk that could have an effect on their car insurance premiums if they were to crash.
Officers in east Lancashire have stated that the trend is "worrying", with young motorists particularly vulnerable as they lack experience and road sense, they added.
Sergeant Mick Young from Lancashire Police commented that education on the issue is vital.
"The safety of both road users and residents is a key priority for the police and we continue to work closely with organisations such as the Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety to reduce the number of deaths and injuries on our roads," he said.
Meanwhile, research from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents has found that male drivers under 25 cause the most serious and fatal accidents of any age group.
