03 September 2007 Manchester motorists hanging up for car journeys
Greater Manchester drivers are choosing not to pick up a handheld mobile phone while they are driving, it has been reported. The rate local police have been catching people in the area has been cut by close to a third in the last six months after the Department for Transport increased the penalties for being caught in the act, the Manchester Evening News has commented.
Since new regulations were brought in on February 27th 2007, drivers risk a £60 fine and three points added to their licence if they use the devices while on the road. This may also affect a car insurance policy if insurers view these people as hazards.
With 3,150 people killed on UK roads last year, Inspector John Williams stated that he was "pleased" with the figures, but added that there is still work to be done.
"Talking on a mobile phone while driving seriously affects concentration and ability to react to dangerous situations," he said.
The official added: "We are aware that some people still continue to disregard it and we will continue to target them."
