31 August 2007 Police: We cannot excuse drivers on handheld mobiles

A top official in Scotland has claimed that driving while using on a handheld phone is dangerous act that cannot be excused.

Tayside Police have stated that motorists have had enough time to get used to regulations against the offence, which were originally passed in 2003.

Since then, the government has increased the punishment for those caught out to a £60 fine and a three-point licence penalty.

While the act can seriously harm motorists and pedestrians, a conviction can also affect a car insurance policy.

"I'll say it again: divert your call, not your attention. The consequences could be disastrous if you take you eyes off the road or are distracted, even for a split second, because of your mobile phone," said the constabulary's Chief Constable John Vine.

Official government statistics show that 3,150 people died on roads in the UK in 2006.
