28 August 2007 Take out contents cover, students warned

People in higher education have been told that they should look to add contents cover to their home insurance premiums.

Manchester Student Homes has stated that while private halls of residence may offer "safety in numbers", a more thorough policy may reduce the risk of being left with nothing in the event of a burglary.

While some institutions offer insurance included in the cost of rent, a company representative added that people should look to take out cover "wherever they are living".

"We always suggest that you take out contents insurance; there is a chance that you will become a victim of crime. I would suggest that it is important for a student to take [it] out," said Cooper Healey, manager of the group.

Funded by both Manchester University and Manchester Metropolitan University, Manchester Student Homes oversees the accommodation of students in the city.
