23 August 2007 Drivers taking cars overseas

A large number of drivers are planning to take advantage of the channel tunnel and ferries to take their own vehicle with them on holiday this year.

In fact, research from Zurich shows that a quarter of motorists are willing to drive as far as 750 miles, while one in five are expecting to spend more than 15 hours behind the wheel.

However, while this may be convenient and avoids the need for hire cars, the firm warns that 28 per cent of motorists who would be driving abroad for the first time are yet to check their car insurance to see if it covers them outside the UK.

Roy Seeds, head of motor underwriting at Zurich Insurance, said: "While it might not be top of the 'to do' list before a holiday we urge motorists to give their insurer a quick call before they go as this will help speed up any potential claims."

A similar warning came recently from NFU Mutual, urging drivers to check their policies before heading overseas.
