23 August 2007 Drivers 'would swap points'
As many as one in ten UK motorists would ask someone to take points on their licence to avoid a rise in car insurance costs or loss of licence. This is the finding of consumer advice firm Confused.com, which revealed that Brits would ask partners, friends, work colleagues and children to take the points for them.
In addition, some would resort to asking or paying strangers. However, 96 per cent of those polled said they would not accept payment to take another's licence points, suggesting that willing candidates would be hard to find.
Debra Williams, managing director of Confused.com, noted that speed cameras sometimes do not take a clear picture of the driver.
But she warned: "The consequences of selling or buying points could be a criminal record and a spell at 'Her Majesty's pleasure'.
"Our advice is to ease off the gas, drive more responsibly and avoid the ultimate penalty."
Earlier this year, high-profile footballers Teddy Sheringham and Bobby Zamora were implicated in a points swapping scandal.
