22 August 2007 Drivers 'may recoup £2m in fines'

A driver in Aberdeen who successfully appealed against a parking ticket may have opened the floodgates for other motorists who feel they have been hard done by, it has been claimed.

Scottish Park Appeals Service adjudicator Peter Royds ruled that all notices must display both the date they were issued and the "seen on" date before a person has to pay.

This means that people who received a ticket without these features could receive £2 million in fines back - a handy bonus for those who also have car insurance and road tax bills to pay.

But Willie Young, secretary of the opposition Labour group on Aberdeen City Council was disappointed with the action.

"If it transpires that this money has to be written off because of a loophole in the law caused by someone's negligence, it would be a disgrace," he said.

This comes after motorists in Glasgow found themselves having to pay for an extra hour's stay when parking meters in the area were not adjusted for British Summer Time in March 2007.
