20 August 2007 Police issue warning after van thefts
Police in a northern area of Northampton have urged drivers to keep an eye on their vans following a spate of thefts from vehicles in the region, it has been reported. The Evening Telegraph stated that local officer Nick Peck has told motorists to make sure they lock up their vehicles completely before leaving them.
He added that they should "close all windows and sunroofs" too.
A break-in could result in a compromised car insurance policy and the officer claimed that satellite navigation systems are particularly popular with thieves.
In order to combat this, motorists may consider removing such devices completely each time they park up. Similarly, they may wish to wipe off any suction marks left on the windscreen which suggest that they have such machinery.
"Do not make it easy for the thieves," the officer told the local news provider.
Home Office statistics show that there were close to 1.7 million vehicle-related break-ins over 2006 and 2007.
