20 August 2007 Congestion charge benefits questioned by ABD
London mayor Ken Livingstone's plans to increase the congestion charge have been criticised by the Association of British Drivers (ABD).This comes in response to the politician's proposals to hike up the cost of the tax for those driving less carbon-efficient automobiles such as sports cars and 4x4s.
While ten per cent of emissions are caused by the vehicles, eight per cent of the population of London drive them and as a result will be paying extra - a one per cent levy which the organisation has called into question.
Affected motorists will have to pay this in addition to car insurance and road tax costs.
"Turning the congestion charge into an attack on pollution will not divert attention from its failures," commented the body.
Earlier in the year, the British public made their views on the government's plans to introduce road pricing clear.
Some 1.8 million people signed a 10 Downing Street website petition against the charge.
