17 August 2007 British holidaymakers 'shop 10 days in advance'

People heading for a short holiday next weekend will shop for it from ten days beforehand, according to new research.

Some two million people are to descend on the high street looking to pick up bargains on clothes, foreign currency and travel insurance as they start to think about what to take away with them, M&S Money has stated.

The firm commented that a 60 per cent increase in business will accompany the 40 per cent extra holiday bookings this month.

Britons like to get on top on things when they go away, said James Yerkess, travel money manager for M&S Money.

"Waiting until ten days before a holiday means that these bargains can be bagged at the same time as purchasing holiday essentials like travel money," the expert remarked.

But holidays in Britain are now pricier than those abroad, according to the National Consumer Council.
