16 August 2007 Drivers warned of break-in threat

Police in Tayside have warned drivers not to leave valuable items in their vehicles.

In order to reduce the risk of a break-in, motorists have been urged to completely remove all indications that there may be something of value in the car.

While laptops, stereos and mobile phones may represent an attractive haul for thieves, satellite navigation systems have proven particularly popular, the constabulary stated.

Divisional crime prevention officer Colin Brough added that erasing all trace of the device may keep criminals at bay - something which could also preserve a car insurance policy's no claims bonus.

"It is important to take the whole unit with you so that there is no visible evidence of the system having been fitted," the officer said.

The issue is not just limited to Tayside, as the South Wales Echo has reported a number of vehicle attacks in the Blackwood region.
