16 August 2007 Parents 'spend £5.29 billion on summer holidays'

People in Britain will spend a combined total of more than £5 billion entertaining their children over the summer, it has been claimed.

According to Sainsbury's Bank, each family will spend an average of £507.80 on activities such as going to the cinema, visiting the park and buying toys.

However, those looking to take their children on holiday this year could end up spending more than they had originally intended if they do not purchase travel insurance.

"Kids depend on mum and dad for everything, not just during the holidays, but throughout their whole childhood. Parents need to consider how their families would cope financially should something happen to them," said Claire Moyles, the company's life insurance manager.

This comes as the Association of British Insurers called upon all consumers taking out travel insurance to check the small print of their policies in order to ensure they are getting the right deal.
