14 August 2007 'Car cruisers' targeted by Birmingham police

Motorists who drive around while playing loud music with the windows down could have their cars taken away from them, according to police in Birmingham.

The BBC has reported that the city's constabulary will start confiscating vehicles if the activity continues at the entertainment complex in the Broad Street area.

Complaints from local residents have spurred police into action, with acting sergeant Jake Flanagan adding that there will be a warning before they take cars.

"Where a vehicle is being driven in a careless or inconsiderate manner and is likely to cause harassment and alarm, distress or annoyance to anybody else, we, the police, have the power to seize that vehicle," he said.

This comes after the government increased the penalties given to drivers found to be on their mobile phones while behind the wheel earlier this year.

Motorists can now pick up a £60 fine and three licence penalty points.

They may also find it difficult to pick up a cheap car insurance policy if they have a conviction.
