14 August 2007 Bank warns of further flood risk
Met Office warnings of heavy rain and floods have resulted in a high street bank issuing a series of tips to help owners keep properties safe.According to Halifax, people should place sandbags around the building if flooding is imminent in order to keep water from getting in.
They should also switch off the electrical mains supply so as to avoid the risks of electrocution and fire.
Similarly, homeowners can avoid damage to their goods and a claim on their home insurance contents cover by moving items upstairs while the water subsides.
"There are several simple steps homeowners can take before a flood hits that can go a long way towards minimising water damage," said Vicky Emmott, senior manager of underwriting at the company.
Gloucestershire was particularly badly hit during the last bout of flooding to hit the UK in June and July 2007.
The severe weather has made an estimated £50 million in damage to the local infrastructure.
