13 August 2007 Motorists 'should check tyres before driving'
A road safety organisation has urged drivers to assess the condition of their tyres before they hit the road.TyreSafe has warned motorists of the dangers of having a bald tyre - one without appropriate tread depth - and the damage it could do.
While Formula 1 cars employ them in order to increase speed, they can also dramatically add to stopping distances.
And statistics from the organisation show that 12 per cent of vehicles may be carrying a bald tyre.
For drivers, this could be a serious problem on the road, especially if they are looking to keep their car insurance policy's no claims bonus intact.
"TyreSafe advises that motorists check their tyres visually every week and more thoroughly on a monthly basis. The organisation also recommends that drivers should never delay replacing a defective tyre," TyreSafe commented.
Last week, a motor parts importer recalled 250,000 Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber tyres after concerns over their efficiency.
