08 August 2007 Company car caravan-towers 'need to check insurance'

Company car drivers using their vehicles to tow their caravans this summer may be at risk if their car insurance policy does not thoroughly cover them, according to a fleet firm.

Lex Momentum has stated that it may be awkward to distinguish where the bill for an accident ends up as - technically - the employer should pay the costs.

In order to avoid such complications, the company has advised that motorists check with their bosses before they set off on their summer vacation.

"They should seek guidance from their fleet manager or HR department. Under no circumstances should they tow without prior agreement as they may not be covered under their company's insurance policy," said John Webb, fleet consultant at the firm.

Meanwhile, 28 per cent of caravan owners do not even bother taking out insurance on their vehicles, according to research from Towergate.
