06 August 2007 Car-savvy women 'explode popular myth'

The traditional stereotype portraying women as anything but car-savvy has been refuted by new research.

Statistics gathered from a Post Office survey show that 57 per cent of females can check their cars' oil levels without help, while 44 per cent are proficient when it comes to topping up anti-freeze.

Exactly half of them check the air pressure of their tyres before making a long journey and, in the event of a breakdown, 21 per cent would be fine with installing a spare.

And this may mean that as a result car insurance companies look kindly upon women when working out a policy for them.

"This research highlights that women are becoming more conscious of the car, their safety, and the effects a well-maintained car has on the environment," said Phil Ashkuri, head of insurance for the firm.

Other factors may be considered when drivers look to take out a policy, including age and road experience.
