03 August 2007 Three-quarters motorists 'would fail driving test today'

Out of every four motorists on UK roads today, three would fail their driving test if they had to retake it, according to new research.

From the 20 motorists What Car? magazine asked to try the assessment again, 15 failed.

This comes despite the fact that the motorists had a combined total of 416 years worth of experience between them, it added.

And yet less than a third (31 per cent) of motorists will admit that their performance behind the wheel is under par - a false confidence those looking to preserve their car insurance no-claims policy may not want to hear.

The magazine's editor Steve Fowler commented: "We believe drivers should be made to take regular refresher courses with a qualified driving instructor."

Currently, the age at which it becomes legal for a young person to learn to drive in the UK is 17.
