31 July 2007 Hotline shops drink-drivers

A confidential hotline has been created by road safety experts allowing people to report drivers they believe are taking to the road under the influence, it has been reported.

Durham police is using the Crimestoppers service in order to bolster its summer crackdown against drink and drug-driving, according to the Sunderland Echo.

Officers added that those who dial the number - 0800 555 111 - will not be asked to reveal personal details and will not be tracked.

However, those reported may suffer to renew a car insurance policy if they pick up a conviction.

PC Dave Nixon claimed that this is a necessary measure, as drink and drug-driving are "socially unacceptable".

"People would not hesitate to report a man roaming the streets with a loaded shotgun, but for some reason may be wary of telling the authorities about a drunk driver," he said.

Figures from the Department for Transport show that close to one in six road deaths involves a driver over the legal alcohol limit.
