30 July 2007 Psychologists 'to make drivers safer'

A new study will attempt to assess how learner drivers spot hazards on the road.

Researchers at the University of Nottingham are looking for young drivers with six or more lessons on the road under their belts in order to test how they react to potentially dangerous situations.

The Risk Awareness package currently available in British School of Motoring centres will be used, while each of the 200 subjects analysed will be paid £7 an hour.

Dr Lyn Jackson, one of the organisers of the initiative, has described the simulator as "a real boon".

And it may be that young drivers receive lower car insurance premiums if this helps to improve their technique.

Meanwhile, statistics from the Department for Transport has indicated that 3,150 people were killed on roads in the UK in 2006.

This is lower than figures from 2005, when 3,201 died in road traffic collisions.
