30 July 2007 Police crackdown to target drug drivers
A summer crackdown in England and Wales will see motorists driving under the influence of drugs targeted, it has been reported. The BBC has reported that drug-driving has been called a "growing problem" which can be just as dangerous as driving while drunk.
Officers will be monitoring the roads and pulling drivers over for testing in order to catch out those unfit to be behind the wheel.
And Nottinghamshire police chief constable Steve Green commented that a more responsible attitude to driving is necessary - a change which could see car insurance prices lowered.
"The police service is not willing to tolerate this type of offending and it is our intention to crack down heavily during this campaign," he said.
Legal prescription drugs can count as an offending substance if a driver is found to be behaving erratically.
Motorists should check with their doctor whether they are able to drive while on medication.
