Industry News from Yes Insurance

30 July 2007 Home insurance 'very important' when renovating

The importance of taking out home insurance when renovating a property has been outlined by an industry publication.

According to Homebuilding & Renovating magazine, smaller jobs can be covered on an exiting policy but larger work may need a specialist deal.

This comes following a recent DCLG English House Condition Survey from 2005, which classified 27.1 per cent of privately-owned homes as sub-par for human habitation.

It added that an average of £7,489 would be needed to improve them to a decent status.

"If you're doing a loft conversion or a small extension, that tends to be something that you can get specialist small-level insurance for … but it's very important that it is insured," said magazine editor Jason Orme.

Homebuilding & Renovating is the biggest-selling magazine for self builders in the UK.

It runs competitions, exclusive news and publishes facts and building regulations.
