27 July 2007 Homes without insurance "playing flood roulette"
People who have not taken out home insurance on their property are playing flood roulette, according to one consumer website. The recent severe weather conditions in the south of England have led to chaos on the country's roads and railway lines, while hundreds have been left at least temporarily homeless.
Confused.com has stated that with five million people living in flood risk areas, it may not be a wise choice to go without cover.
Debra Williams, managing director of the company, described the threat faced by those without protection as "severe" and something that could be avoided with the right policy.
"The typical claim for flooding stands in the region of £15,000-£30,000, yet home and contents premiums could be as little as £20 a month, she said.
Research from the company earlier this year found that the average UK freezer contains £173 worth of food, items which may or may not be covered.
Customers are advised to check with their insurers.
