27 July 2007 Weather 'poses threat to insurers'

Home insurance companies may be affected by extreme weather conditions in the future, according to a new report.

An Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report has claimed that more frequent heavy, intense rain is a distinct possibility if the environment were to become hotter and drier.

Such harsh weather could result in home insurance companies paying out billions more, it added.

But Vicki Bakshi, associate director at F&C's governance and sustainable development team, has outlined how the industry can respond.

"They need to make sure they are getting involved in all the risk reduction activities they can. They should work with customers to help them reduce their future vulnerability," she said.

Former US vice president Al Gore has been the driving force behind climate change awareness in recent times.

The politician's movie on the subject, An Inconvenient Truth, picked up an Academy Award at this year's ceremony.
